At the moment, ReadItSwapIt is totally free to join and to use. Unlike other sites, we don't charge a subscription fee or commission charge. The only cost involved is the postage of sending your books to other users - and that's the price of the stamps you buy, we don't make money from expensive postage charges that are cunningly higher than the real postage cost.

How much does it cost to post a book?

Most paperbacks of around 300 pages or less will cost only 90p to post (second class with Royal Mail). Larger paperbacks, or hardbacks, may cost up to £1.63.

You can find a full range of postal charges at the Royal Mail website. Remember that most paperbacks will weigh less than 500 grams. You can also buy stamps online and print your own postage.

Compare that to Amazon Marketplace. The price of the postage and packaging alone is £2.75 (correct as at 01/08/2006).

How do I ensure my book arrives in a good condition?

Put your book in a plastic bag or bubble wrap to protect it from the rain in case the packaging gets ripped. If the book's packed in a brown envelope tape it into a neat parcel shape to prevent it from getting ripped. Where possible, try to ensure your parcel will go through someone's letterbox so the postman doesn't have to knock on their door.
